Why Does Injection Moulding Price Change So Much?
Ask three factories to quote the same plastic part and the injection moulding price can come back in three very different ways. One supplier gives a low number but very little detail. Another shows a higher mould charge and a lower piece price. A third supplier lists inspection, packing, and shipping terms one by one. It is to check which costs are included, which ones are missing, and which ones may appear after the order starts.
Injection moulding is sensitive to price because it has one-time engineering cost and repeated production cost in the same project. The mould is made around your part shape, then the press repeats the shot, cooling, ejection, trimming, and packing. A small change in wall thickness, material, or surface requirement can move the final price more than a new buyer expects.

Tooling Sets the Starting Point
The mould is usually the first large cost in the quote. A simple single-cavity tool for a small housing is not priced like a hardened steel multi-cavity tool with sliders, lifters, texture, and tight shutoffs.
Tool steel grade, machining time, electrode work, polishing, heat treatment, trial runs, and design review are all part of the tooling cost. A lower mould price may work for a pilot run, but it is not a saving if the tool wears out early or needs repair after every batch.
Part Design Changes the Machine Time
The machine cost is linked to cycle time and cavitation. Xometry’s public injection molding cost guide, accessed in August 2026, describes cycle time as about 60% of final part cost and says cooling can be around 80% of the molding cycle.
That should be treated as a working reference, not a fixed rule for every moulding shop. Even so, the point is clear enough for quoting work: thick walls, deep ribs, and slow cooling keep each part in the press longer.
Material Prices Move the Quote
Resin cost is more than “plastic by the kilogram.” A project may call for flame-retardant ABS, UV-stable PP, glass-filled nylon, food-contact material, medical-grade resin, or a color-matched compound.
Drying time, moisture control, masterbatch, regrind limits, and scrap rate also affect the number. No reliable public index gives one resin price for every grade, region, color, and order size, so a real quote should be based on a dated supplier resin offer.
How Can You Read an Injection Moulding Quote?
A useful quote should let you follow the cost logic without asking the factory for its private worksheet. If the quote only says “mould fee” and “unit price,” there is still too much hidden. Ask for the main assumptions in plain language, because that is the only way to compare suppliers on the same basis.
Tooling Cost and Tool Life
Check whether the quoted tool is aluminum, P20, H13, S136, or another steel grade. Also ask about expected tool life, cavity number, hot runner or cold runner, texture, spare inserts, and tool ownership.
For a 5,000-piece trial, a cheaper tool may be enough. For a 300,000-piece annual program, a stronger tool with better cooling can lower the unit price, even if the mould charge looks hard to accept at the beginning.
Piece Price and Minimum Order Quantity
The unit price should show quantity breaks. A 2,000-piece run has more setup cost per part than a 50,000-piece run, even when the plastic part itself is small.
Setup, drying, color change, machine reservation, and first-article approval still take time. Minimum order quantity also matters in real purchasing work, because a factory may quote a good price at 100,000 pieces while your cash flow only supports 10,000 pieces per shipment.
Quality Checks and Packing
Inspection can be basic or fairly strict, depending on how the part is used. A cosmetic cover may need color checks under standard light, while a gear, connector, or sealing cap may need CMM reports, gauge checks, pull tests, or leak tests.
Packing also changes the price. Individual polybags, dividers, anti-scratch film, export cartons, pallet wrapping, and barcode labels all add labor and material, and buyers usually notice those small items only when the container is already at the warehouse.
Which Design Choices Raise or Lower the Price?
Design is where money is often saved before production starts. After steel is cut, every change takes more time, costs more, and causes more back-and-forth. A design review before quotation is a simple way to avoid price surprises later.
Wall Thickness and Cooling Time
Thick plastic may look strong, but it can cause sink marks, longer cooling time, warpage, and higher material use. A thinner wall with ribs often works better than a solid block of resin.
For example, if a part uses 50 grams of shot weight and the resin quote is 2.60 dollars per kilogram, the resin portion is 0.13 dollars before scrap. If a rib change removes 8 grams from the shot, the saving repeats in every cycle and every order.
Cavities, Slides, and Lifters
More cavities can reduce the unit price because each cycle makes more parts. At the same time, more cavities raise tooling cost and may require a larger press if projected area and clamp force go up.
Slides and lifters are useful for undercuts, side holes, clips, and snap features, but they add machining work and maintenance risk. If a clip can be changed so it pulls straight from the mould, the quote is usually easier to control.
Texture, Tolerance, and Cosmetic Rules
Glossy surfaces, fine texture, hidden gate marks, and tight flatness need more tool work. A dull black texture may hide flow marks better than glossy white, although it still needs polishing and etching time.
Tight tolerances are fine when the function needs them. They become expensive when they are placed everywhere just in case, so keep tight dimensions on sealing faces, mating areas, shaft holes, and assembly-critical features.
How Do Material and Market Data Affect Price?
Public data cannot replace a supplier quote, but it helps buyers understand the price background. Plastic parts are tied to resin, energy, labor, shipping, and general manufacturing cost. When a supplier explains a price change, ask what source they used and when the data was taken.
Plastic Product Inflation Signals
Federal Reserve Economic Data, using the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Producer Price Index for Plastics Product Manufacturing, reported 242.104 for July 2026, with June 1993 equal to 100. The series was updated on August 13, 2026.
This number does not tell you the exact cost of your ABS bracket. It does show that U.S. plastic product prices have moved a lot over time, so an old benchmark price from 2020 may not be a sound guide in 2026.
Electricity Cost in Molding
Electricity is not always the biggest cost line, but presses, dryers, chillers, conveyors, grinders, and compressors all use power. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported a 2025 average industrial electricity price of 8.62 cents per kilowatt-hour in Electric Power Monthly data released in February 2026. It also noted that all-sector retail prices varied widely by state, from 35.72 cents per kilowatt-hour in Hawaii to 8.20 cents in North Dakota. That gap helps explain why the same moulding work can carry different overhead in different regions.
Resin Selection with Verified Data
Material choice should be checked against real technical data, not a quick guess. UL Solutions’ Prospector Data Integrations page, accessed in August 2026, says its plastics database covers more than 100,000 materials from 1,700 global suppliers.
For a buyer, that means melt flow, shrinkage, impact strength, flame rating, UV resistance, and supplier availability should be reviewed before the price is locked. A cheaper resin is not really cheap if it fails drop testing or assembly testing.
Is the Lowest Offshore Price Really the Best Price?
For international buyers, the ex-factory price is only the first number to look at. The real cost also includes freight, duty, inspection, payment terms, lead time, inventory, engineering communication, and the cost of fixing mistakes. Many injection moulding sourcing decisions go wrong because these items are checked too late.
Landed Cost Misses Hidden Items
The Reshoring Initiative 2024 Annual Report plus 1Q2025, in its 2025 survey supplement, says landed cost can ignore about 15% of added offshoring costs and risks compared with total cost of ownership. It also says ex-works price can ignore about 25%.
You do not need to be planning reshoring for this to matter. The lesson for normal sourcing is simple: compare total cost, not only the first price on the quotation sheet.
Total Cost of Ownership Changes Decisions
The same Reshoring Initiative report states that 91% of contract manufacturers said price was a principal reason they lost orders to imports, while 69% of OEMs said cost was their top offshoring priority. That sounds familiar to any purchasing team, but it also creates pressure on suppliers.
If buyers only reward the lowest quoted price, suppliers may cut inspection steps, use weaker packing, or delay tool maintenance to keep the number low. Those choices may not show up in the first quote, but they can show up in claims, delays, and rework.
Communication Reduces Price Drift
Price drift often starts with unclear files. A PDF may show one tolerance while the 3D model shows another, or the color sample may arrive only after the mould trial.
The buyer may expect a mirror finish, but the RFQ may say standard texture. This is normal shop-floor friction, not a disaster, and it can be reduced with clear drawings, signed samples, and one agreed contact window.
How Can You Prepare a Better RFQ?
The best way to get a reliable injection moulding quote is to remove guessing from the RFQ. The supplier should know what to build, how many to make, what quality level to meet, and how the parts will be shipped. A tidy RFQ may not produce the cheapest quote, but it usually produces a more realistic one.
3D Files and 2D Drawings
Send STEP files, 2D drawings, material grade, color number, surface finish, tolerance notes, and assembly photos if you have them. Mark cosmetic faces and non-cosmetic faces so the factory does not polish or protect the wrong area.
If the part works with a metal insert, PCB, gasket, shaft, or mating plastic part, share that background too. A factory can quote faster and with fewer assumptions when the function is clear.
Annual Volume and Order Rhythm
State the first order quantity, annual forecast, and likely shipment schedule. A 100,000-piece annual forecast shipped once a year is different from 8,000 pieces every month.
The first case usually supports larger batches, while the second case needs stable scheduling and inventory control. This affects cavity count, resin buying, packing labor, and sometimes warehouse space.
Acceptance Standard and Shipment Plan
Tell the supplier how the parts will be judged. Use AQL level, critical dimensions, color tolerance, functional test method, and packing rules, rather than leaving these points open.
Also define incoterms, destination, carton limits, and pallet requirements. If you need PPAP, RoHS, REACH, food-contact documents, or flame-rating proof, ask at the RFQ stage because adding paperwork after production starts is a common way to turn a cheap order into an expensive one.
